Released from Universal Interactive's Black Label Games, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is based on the written works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and with this rich literary resource, the publisher, on the back of developer Surreal Software, has created an action-adventure game in the style of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It authentically presents various chapters of the book that were edited from the movie (or that never made it in) such as the Ancient Forest and the Barrow Downs, and it includes particularly memorable hobbits, characters such as Tom Bombadil, and other secondary but likeable characters.

A trilogia de J.R.R. Tolkien foi um verdadeiro marco cultural quando lançada, e sua influência permanece até os dias de hoje. E como parte de seus fãs mais ardorosos foram os primeiros 'nerds' dos computadores, não é surpresa que existam diversas de adaptações não-oficiais das aventuras de Bilbo e Frodo Bolseiro em versão eletrônica. Mas com o recente 'revival' da franquia pelo filme da New Line Cinema, a Universal Interactive está preparando um jogo oficial do primeiro livro para o PS2.

Fellowship of the Ring foi anunciado como título do Xbox. Aproveitando a chegada do segundo filme, a Universal Interactive revelou que aproveitará para lançar também versões para o videogame da Sony e PC. Paralelamente, a Electronic Arts trabalha em Two Towers, baseado segundo livro.

Ao contrário do que muita gente esperava, Fellowship of the Ring não é um RPG, mas um jogo de ação-aventura. Nele, você controla o pobre Frodo Bolseiro em perspectiva de primeira pessoa, em sua longa e árdua jornada do Condado até o rio Anduim. Aragorn e Gandalf também serão controlados pelo jogador, dando variedade à jogabilidade.
